I have enjoyed
cooking since I was very small. My earliest memory of cooking was when I was
about 5 or 6 years old, and I made up a recipe called "Chocolate
Design". It was a chocolate drizzle, that I drizzled on some molassess
cookies that my mom had made for a friend. I was never a creative person... no
good at drawing, scrapbooking, cake decorating, etc., but I found my creativity
in the kitchen. My mom taught me a lot of cooking basics when I was twelve. The first real dinner I made was a pot roast. Growing up from
then on, I'd make dinner about once a week. With her guidance, I would make
meals for the family. I am one of nine children, and regularly cooked for fifteen or
more people. Making dinner at
home, I never tried out many new recipes or techniques. We had a relatively regular meal
schedule at our house, and I'd pick from one of our normal dinners each week.
When I got married in the summer of 2010, I really began to enjoy
cooking. My husband encourages me to try new recipes. He frequently helps me, and takes pictures of my food.
He also always does the dishes for me after I've made him a meal. I cook, he cleans up. I'll take
that deal anyday! I have no professional training, though I would enjoy taking some cooking classes someday.
Why "Katy at
the Kitchen Door"?
From the time I was
very small, I remember my grandfather singing the song "K-K-K-Katy"
to me every time I saw him. The last line of the song is, "I'll be waiting
at the k-k-k-kitchen door." I thought it was a fitting name for my blog! K-K-K-Katy
